Reviews

This is really a picture book. Granted, the full-page pictures are nice -- and there are nearly 200 of them, but aside from the pictures the book only contains a 2-page preface consisting mostly of fond memories by the author of her Shriner grandfather (sweet, though), 8 pages of a somewhat tongue-in-cheek historical overview of the Shriners by another writer (Glenn O'Brien, entitled: "The Ancient Arabic Order of Nobels of the Mystic Shrine: They're not really fake Arabs, they're like antique Trekkies with hearts of gold"), the "Official 1920 Shrine Song," and 3 pages of about 25 "Shriners Facts." I really don't like giving a low rating to this book because the author's heart really seems to be in the right place (and she evokes fond memories of my own Shriner grandfather), but if you're looking for a book with a lot of factual content about Shriner/Mason history, culture, and practices, this is not it. Lots of pretty and nostalgic pictures though.
