Paula Rego (F A GENERAL) Details

The monumentality and psychological drama of Paula Rego's paintings have established her as one of the most important figurative painters of her generation. Her first retrospective exhibition in London in 1988 brought together a range of her dramatically simplified paintings of the ambiguous relations of men, women and children. This study was first published in 1992, but since then Rego has produced new work, including the "Peter Pan" etchings, the "Dog Woman" series and "The Ostriches", which are illustrated and discussed. Bringing together paintings, prints and drawings alongside documentary photographs, this book features a revised chronology, and list of exhibitions. Read more

Reviews

This is an excellent and quite comprehensive monograph on one of the foremost figurative artists working in the UK today - Paula Rego.I remember this Phaidon book when it first came out and it was an impressive volume then; this new, revised edition now includes a selection of her brilliantly executed pastel paintings including the "Dog Women" and "The Ostriches" series, and an in-depth study of the mural "Crivelli`s Garden" made for the brasserie of the new Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery. There are 253 illustrations with 188 of those in colour; good sized illustrations, beautifully reproduced. All phases of Rego`s fascinating career are covered; a highly versatile artist, she has worked in a range of media - oils, collage, acrylic, pastel and printmaking. The text is illuminating and does much to explain the ideas behind her personal visual language - the Portuguese folk tales, fairy tales and wider cultural influences. This is without doubt the book to have if you are interested in Rego, it functions as both a fine introduction to the artist and a good reference work.* A third edition of this book, published in 2006 is currently available - check it out.*
